Time Standards
An Explanation of the Swimming Levels:
REGIONAL: these competitions are for swimmers 10 years old or younger.
PROVINCIAL DEVELOPMENT: these are competitions for swimmers who are 10 years old or younger who have attained the minimum requirements for Provincial Development time standards. At some of these competitions, swimmers 11 years old or older who have not attained their Provincial AA time standards may be invited to attend.
PROVINCIAL AA-AAA Invitations: Any swimmer who is 11 years old or older who has attained the minimum requirements for any one of the following levels AA or AAA can compete in these competitions.
PROVINCIAL 11-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS: These are Provincial competitions that take place in February and June. These are open to swimmers 11-12 year old have attained the minimum Provincial time requirement.
PROVINCIAL AA CHAMPIONSHIPS: These competitions take place in February and June. These are open to swimmers 13-17 year old swimmers who have attained the minimum requirements of 3 AA championship time standards.
PROVINCIAL AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIPS (AAA): Any swimmer between the ages of 13 and 16 years old may participate in these competitions which take place in March and July, providing they have achieved the requisite 3 AAA time standards.
TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS: Also known as "Team Champs", this is a competition for all swimmers 11 years and older who have achieved the minimum requirement time standards as outlined in the meet package for the competition. This competition is a team event so each team competes for points to "win" the meet. There are 5 divisions for Team Championships in the province of Quebec. This competition is now taking place in the fall at the end of October or beginning of November. We are in division 2 for the 2020-21 season.
JUNIOR NATIONAL: The time standards to attend this competition can be attained by any female athlete between the ages of 11 and 17 years old and by any male athlete between the ages of 11 and 18 years old. The Age Group National competition takes place every July in a different Canadian city each year.
EASTERN NATIONAL: The time standards to attend this competition can be attained in multiple age categories for each gender. Athletes who have attained the minimum standards for their age category may attend the Eastern National Championship in April. This competition is in a different Eastern Canadian city each year.
SENIOR NATIONAL: These time standards are separated into age categories. They are difficult to attain. These time standards help swimmers gain access to Canadian Championships and Developmental international trials. These are the benchmark times for swimmers to access international level competitions as well as to compete on most university teams.
TRIALS NATIONAL: These times are a step beyond Senior nationals. These are used solely for national competitions where a senior Canadian team is being chosen, such as the Olympics and the World Championships.
