So now you are a swim parent! What does that mean? You are saying: "What have I gotten myself into?"
While your children are learning new skills in the pool you will be learning a new language and culture: time standards and individual medleys; meet packages and technical bulletins; short course and long course; heat sheets and psych sheets; and when your child reaches 11 years old, TEAM CHAMPS. As your swimmers get older you will learn about fastskins, shaving down and more early mornings than you ever thought possible. And through it all you will be recruited to volunteer.
Yes, swimming is one sport where parents are an integral part of the success of the team. You will be encouraged to take courses and develop new skills yourself: timing, judging strokes and turns, running specialized equipment, refereeing, and feeding masses of other officials. Swim meets require an army of volunteers!
But don't worry, there are many of us here who can teach you the ropes and guide you through the process. We've been there: we all had to learn the order of an individual medley too. As your children make friends with their team mates, you will discover that you will make friends too, with your fellow volunteers.
So what does it mean to be a swim parent? It means you too are part of the team! Go CSLA!
